Synthesis of unique Nickel Sulphide (Ni3S2& β-NiS) Nano morphology for counter electrode in Quantum Dot Dye Sensitized Solar Cell

Paper Abstract

Millerite (NiS) and Ni3S2 has been synthesized by hydrothermal method. Using different precursors & solvents and by varying the reactions conditions, such as temperature ,molarity,pH ,etc results in different morphology of Nickel Sulphide .In this study different morphologies of NiS have been grown i.e. Nano fullerene, Nano womb, Nano rod & Nano crysthanamum. For the growth of Nano Fullerne, Nickel Nitrate and Thiourea have been used as precursors and by increasing the molarity of precursors Nano Womb like structure is obtained . By adding ammonia in above reaction conditions, single phase β-NiS, nano-rod like structure has been obtained .Ammonia used as reducing agent and it also removes the different phases of Nickel Sulphide (NiS) such as NiS,Ni3+XS2, Ni3S2 , Ni7S6 , Ni7S2 , Ni3S4 , NiS2 and so on . For growth of Nano crysthanamum. Trisodium citrate are added in above reaction conditions Trisodium citrate is used as capping agent . The X-rd pattern confirms Ni3S2 (Hazelwoodite) and β-NiS ( Rhombohedral) structure of the prepared sample . The optical Band of synthesized compounds is approximately (3.0-4.0 eV ) . In FTIR Spectra, strong vibration bands stretching are observed at <450 cm-1 which is due to NiS. Ni3S2 has high theoretical capacity , excellent rate performance and good conductivity. So it can be used in super capacitor and lithium ions battery. Single phase β-NiS( nano-rod & Nano crysthanamum ) has good optical properties, so it can be used as counter electrode in Quantum dot dye sensitized solar cell as well as dye sensitized solar cell.

Rekha Bhardwaj is a PhD Student and the Research Fellow at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, University of Delhi, India. She completed her BSc hons (Physics) from Universityof Delhi and masters in science from GVM college sonepat in Physics. Her research interests in solar energy nanomaterials .Her research will be based on the optical and electrical properties of nanomaterials over the next several years. She has presented more than 12 papers in national and international conferences &workshops in the field of solar energy nanomaterials , published 6 papers in national journals proceedings.
