 Hydrogen production with spark plug reformer

Talk Abstract
 

In the present study, hydrogen was produced with a reforming system with atomizers and sparks. The reforming system included a supersonic atomization device, spark plugs, high voltage coils, and controlling devices. The methanol water solution was fed into the system with proper amount of air. The air was pumped into the chamber with high frequency oscillation atomizers through a proportional valve. The mass-flow proportion of methanol water solution was set to allow an appropriate amount of the CH3OH-H2O mixture to flow into the atomizer, forming and sustaining the mist. A self-built atomizer with oscillator chips was used for atomization. The operational frequency of the atomizer was 1.6-1.7MHz with a power input of 5W for each oscillator chip. A portion of the air was mixed with the atomized CH3OH-H2O mixture then flow through the spark plug and syngas containing hydrogen was obtained. The operation voltages to the spark plug with and without capacitor were under investigated. The diameters of the atomized CH3OH-H2O mixture were measured. The hydrogen concentrations were analyzed with various conditions.

Short Biography

Dr. Jer-Huan Jang is a seniot professor in the Department of Mechanial Engineering at the Ming Chi University of Technology. He worked as research faculty in the Battery Research Center of Green Energy and Center for Reliability Engineering at the same school. He is also a jointly appointed professor in the Department of Mechanial Engineering at Chang Gung University. He received his MS and PhD degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, in 1989 and 1992, respectively. He has been in academic career since 1995. His research activities deal mainly with heat transfer enhancement, technology in energy storage, and energy harvesting. He is a co-inventor of 10 patents, and has co-authored 50 peer-reviewed publications.
