Talk Abstract

In this keynote presentation, a design of radial inflow turbine for Organic Rankine cycle capable of generating electric power using low-temperature heat source will be addressed. The development, design and performance study of radial turbine will be discussed.

Two major and largely interrelated components of the ORC cycle are the selection of working fluid and the turbine. Different working fluid will be considered based on operating conditions. The refrigerants like R22, R134a and Ammonia will be considered for the discussion. The operating characteristics and numerical performance of the radial turbine for LTHS will be addressed.
The efficiency of the cycle, turbine with respect to off-design condition will be presented during the keynote session. The factors influencing the performance of the ORC LTHS Turbine for closed cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (CC-OTEC) application will be discussed during the key note session.
In order to improve turbine performance, fluid flow analysis will be carried out using a viscous 3-D CFD approach. Real gas properties of the working fluid will be considered in these analyses. Results of systematic characterization of turbine geometry on its performance will be presented. In particular, the effects of changing the number of turbine blades, stagger angle and variation of filleting will be determined.
Two-phase flow calculation involving non-equilibrium condensation of vapour shows the effect of liquid wetness fraction on turbine performance will be considered.

Short Biography

Dr KG Nithesh at present working as an Assistant Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Siddaganga Institute of Technology Tumakur, India. He received his M.Tech degree from VTU Belagavi/SIT Tumakur and Ph.D. degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras India, in 2008 and 2017, respectively. He has published research papers in international journals (Applied energy and Renewable Energy) and conferences. His research interests include ORC cycles, Waste heat recovery, Renewable energy (OTEC, Geothermal), Design of power plant components like turbine and heat exchangers, Turbines for brayton cycle application, Turbines for Rocket turbo-pump application, Twophase flow heat transfer and optimization. He is the recipient of young researcher best presentation award winner for the research title "Design and Performance Analysis of OTEC Turbine" in 3rd program of international platform on ocean energy for young researcher 2017 which was held in Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University, Japan during 27th February - 4th March 2017. He was invited research scholar to Korea maritime university, Busan, South Korea for design and analyzing the radial turbine for 2kWe OTEC lab.
