Location optimization of renewable energy farms for electricity generation using different multi criteria decision making (MCDM) methodologies

Talk Abstract

Energy is an important part of almost all economic activities, services, productions, and population growth, urbanization and industrialization in many countries. Limited resources of energy and increasingly evident environmental effects of fossil fuel consumption has led to a growing awareness about the importance of further use of renewable energy sources in the countries energy portfolio. The first step to be taken for establishing a renewable wind or solar farm is to consider important factors which increase productivity. For example, decision makers select the windiest locations as the best option for wind farms, but there are many different parameters which must be considered like distance to the grid line or geographic characyeristics of the locations and so on. Different Multi-Criteria Decision Making approaches (MCDM) like Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be applied to help us to do the best decision for selecting the best renewable energy sites. There are different methods which can be used in this regard like TOPSIS, VIKOR, ELECTRE, Fuzzy TOPSIS, and Simple Additive Weighting (SAW). A case study will be presented using one of the MCDM methods to prioritize and rank different locations (cities) for installing wind turbines or establishing a solar farm. Results would then be validated at the end.

Short Biography

Ali Mostafaeipour is an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at Yazd University, Iran. He has been teaching at Yazd University since 1989. He studied at Winona State University (University of Minnesota) in state of Minnesota, USA; University of Wisconsin at Platteville, Wisconsin, USA; Alabama A&M, Alabama, USA; and Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran. He has served as the committee member, guest speaker, and co-chairman of 192 international conferences. He has been reviewer of 17 international journals mainly Elsevier. He has presented 93 mostly international conference papers throughout the world. He has undertaken and managed 18 research projects, and holds 3 patents. He has been editorial board of several professional journals. Finally, he has published 87 journal articles mostly at Elsevier, and he authored 5 books. He holds an award for excellence from Yazd University as the year 2013 distinguished researcher, also holds distinguished author of “Wind Energy” book (INTech publisher, 2012, Croatia) with more than 5000 downloads in six months. He also received four awards at different IEOM international conferences too. His research interest lies in renewable energies, wind energy, value engineering, economic evaluation, and feasibility study of project. He is editor in chief of the Natural Resources Conservation and Research Journal in USA. He also was lead guest editor of two more journals, also editorial board member of 8 journals. Finally, he was introduced by Thomson Reuters as top %1 scientists in the world for the year 2018..
