Building a Circular Economy for Automotive Battery Systems

Talk Abstract

A key priority of the UK Government's Industrial Strategy is to deliver clean and flexible energy through the design, development and manufacture of technologies for vehicle electrification. The Automotive Council identified in their 2017 Technology Roadmaps, electrical energy storage as a strategic technology that will enable the transition towards greater transport electrification and ultimately help meet the UK Government’s target of replacing the internal combustion engine by 2050. Battery research over the past decade has delivered significant cell-level advances, e.g. in gravimetric density (250 Wh/kg), volumetric density (700Wh/l) and component cost ($130/kWh). However, a common view reported within the literature is that the sustainability of integrating resource intensive battery packs into vehicles is still not clear. End-of-life (EOL) for the vehicle's battery system has been defined as the battery having a retained capacity of 80% (from when it was new). A number of studies highlight the apparent arbitrary nature of this value. It is often argued that even at 80% capacity retention, there is still inherent value embedded within the battery. The aim of this talk is to present different EOL strategies for automotive batteries, focussing on the methods to extend battery life through repurposing of the battery for second-life applications (e.g. employing used batteries for stationary energy storage) as one method of offsetting the increased emissions and embedded energy associated with initial battery manufacture.

Short Biography

James is a Reader in Vehicle Electrification and Energy Storage at WMG, University of Warwick with nearly 20 years’ experience leading collaborative research teams across industry and academia. Research interests include energy storage modelling, battery system control and design optimisation. In recent years, his research has focussed more on sustainability and the application of these enabling technologies to the creation of a circular economy for battery design, re-use and recycling. James has published over 100 articles and leads a wide portfolio of collaborative research projects funded by EPSRC, Innovate UK and H2020.
