Economic and Environmental Assessment of Biogas Upgrading Using Chicken Manure Biochar:A Study Case in Indonesia

Paper Abstract

Today, biogas utilization is growing in Indonesia, especially in rural areas since Indonesian government popularize biogas as one of alternative energy resources. Unfortunately, the development of biogas technology is often unsustainable because rural communities prefer to consume fossil fuel-based energies which are cheaper, more efficient, and easier to use compared to biogas.

Through biogas upgrading by carbon dioxide adsorption in biogas mixture, the methane composition and energy efficiency of biogas can be increased. In this paper, a preliminary study on the economic and environmental aspects of the development of biogas upgrading technology had been undertaken. Biogas upgrading by carbon dioxide adsorption used chicken manure biochar combined with natural zeolite in the adsorption column. The system was also integrated with sales unit of biochars that have been used as carbon dixode adsorbants.

The results showed that biogas upgrading technology was more profitable if integrated with the sales unit of used biochars. The study also reported that biogas digester with biogas upgrading reduced about 21,379 to 34,150 kg of carbon dioxide emission eq/year compared to biogas digester without biogas upgrading.
