Cleaner Production of Environment-friendly Brass Faucet by Design of Material and Product

Talk Abstract

Due to its excellent mechanical properties, machinability, corrosion resistance, and formability, brass alloy is widely used in pipes, valves, and fittings for transporting water and other aqueous fluids. In order to improve its machinability, Pb is usually added and distributed in the matrix as a microscopic chip breaker and tool lubricant. However, the addition of Pb leads to an inevitable decrease in elongation and strength. At the same time, Pb becomes more and more harmful to the environment and human health, so the demand for lead-free brass in various industrial fields is increasing. In view of this, this paper studied cleaner production of environment-friendly brass faucet by design of material and product. First, an inhomogeneous microstructure in α+β CuZnSiAl lead-free silicon brass was designed and adjusted via the zinc equivalent rule by adding Pb replacers (Si and Al elements). Its inhomogeneity is embodied by that many ultrafine intermetallic compound particles are distributed along the grain boundaries of the a and b phases and embedded into the b-phase matrix, along with high densities of nanoscale intermetallic compounds distributed in the b-phase matrix close to the grain boundaries. This inhomogeneous microstructure can result in the formation of continuous serrated chips and thus free-cutting machinability as well as high strength and large ductility. Secondly, the faucet product design was accomplished according  to the aesthetic principle including creative design, emotional design and ergonomics design, to achieve product modeling, flow patterns, water-saving and energy-saving, operating comfort and other innovations. Thirdly, on the basis of analyzing the internal pressure, velocity and turbulent flow energy of the faucet product, the influence of size and valve opne rate on the flow state of the faucet was simulated, which provides reference data for the optimal design of the faucet structure. Fourth, filling process and solidification process during low pressure die casting of the designed α+β CuZnSiAl silicon brass faucet were simulated with Anycasting software under different pressure-adding speeds or casting temperatures. Furthermore, effect of casting temperature, filling time, pressure, and pressure holding time on microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of the designed α+β CuZnSiAl silicon brass faucet was revealed by using variable-controlling approach on the basis of a complex and thin-walled faucet casting by low pressure die casting. Finally, two typical types of faucet products were manufactured by batch production, which achieved good economic benefits. In summary, this study provides a significant basis for cleaner production of the environment-friendly lead-free brass faucets, and realizes innovative applied energy by environmental protection, water-saving, energy-saving, and material-saving, etc.

Short Biography

Dr. Chao Yang is the director of Institute of Forming Technology and Equipments for Metallic Materials (National Engineering Research Center of Near-net-shape Forming for Metallic Materials) at South China University of Technology, the managing director of Youth Committee of Chinese Materials Research Society, and  the full member of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. He was selected as the fellow of Excellent Talents in Higher University of Guangdong Province in 2010, and the fellow of New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education in 2011. His research interests cover novel lead-free brass alloys, advanced titanium alloys, shape memory alloys, amorphous/nanocrystalline/ultrafine grained alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and casting. He has presided 11 China national-level projects, published more than 90 SCI-indexed papers in reputed journals such as Acta Mater., Scripta Mater., and Appl. Phys. Lett., etc., and applied 35 China invention patents and 4 U.S. invention patents, and  compiled 1 English monographs.
